Harrington rod

The surgical device made of stainless steel is called Harrington rod or Harrington implant. For treating the spinal column the Harrington rod was implemented along it. The other conditions of implementing this rod include scoliosis or coronal plane or lateral curvature of spine. The instrumentation of Harrington rod was used to treat deformity and instability of the spine. During movements, when the spine could maintain its normal shape, the deformity occurs. The consequences of such instability can be spinal deformities, nerve damage and disabling pain. Spinal deformities can be caused by fractures, birth defects, marfan syndrome, neuromuscular diseases, neurofibromatosis, tumors and severe injuries. Mainly for the treatment of scoliosis the Harrington rod was used.

Kirschner wire

K-wires or Kirscner wires or pins are sharpened, sterilized, smooth pins made of stainless steel. These wires are used extensively in orthopaedics, veterinary and other types of surgeries. Different sizes of these wires are available which are utilized for offering an anchor for skeletal traction or for pin fixation or for holding the fragments of bone together. Percutaneous pin fixation or through the skin the pins are driven into the bone which is done by using a hand or a power drill. These also form component of the llizarov apparatus.

During some operations, for temporary fixation the K-wires are used. Then these are removed after definitive fixation. Generally four weeks post operation these pins are removed. If the fracture fragments are small like hand injuries and wrist fractures then these can be utilized for definitive fixation. These can be also utilized for intramedullary fixation of bones like the ulna.

Stainless Steel Strips are steel products which are fabricated from the pickled hot rolled strips. These steel strips are also known as cold rolled strips. Cold reduction operations and additional annealing is required in high carbon strip steel. Then the process of roll slitting is used to slit the coil to get the desired width. Cold rolled stainless steel strips are the final products which has been cut into strips of oscillates coil or specific widths and coiled for delivery. The final product is frequently interleaved with another material or paper which helps the surface finish of the material to be protected and also supports in retaining the rust prevention solution or oil. This product is stamped later to make it a piece from the strip steel.

The steel strips and other hot rolled metals in the mechanical properties have little directionality and residual stresses induce deformation. Some directionality is imparted by the non metallic inclusions and the directional properties are present in the work piece which has thickness less than 0.79 inches or 20 millimeters. Quality is induced by non uniformed cooling and the non uniform cooling occurs on the surfaces where non uniform cross section occurs like in H beams and I beams. Good quality finished product consists of mill scale covered on the surface which at high temperatures form an oxide. Process of smooth surface cleaning or pickling is used to remove the mill scale for obtaining a smooth surface. Rail tracks are produced from the steel strips by the process of hot rolling.

Guar gum is produced using various processing techniques which depend upon the needs of the end product. The processes which are used in commercial production of guar gum include differential attrition, roasting, polishing and sieving. The guar gum of food grade is fabricated in various stages. The most important in food grade process is the selection of guar split. For cleaning the split, it is screened and then in a double cone mixer it is soaked to prehydrate. The stage of prehydrating is significant because the final product’s rate of hydration is determined in this stage. 

A flaker is used to pass the high moisture content soaked splits. After passing, the grounding process is done with the flaked guar splits and then these splits are dried. Rotary screens are used to screen the powder so that the required particle size is delivered. The remaining oversized particles are again either reground in a different regrind plant or to main ultra fine are recycled which depends upon the viscosity requirement of the particles.

The load of the grinder is reduced at this stage. It is difficult to grind the soaked splits. More heat is generated for direct grinding in the grinder which is not required in this process because the hydration of the product is reduced. From the halves of the endosperm, the husk is separated by the processes of polishing, grinding and heating to obtain the refined guar split. The refined guar split is converted into powder by further grinding and treating it. 

The germ and husk called guar meal is yielded from the split manufacturing process. The guar meal is used as cattle feed and is sold widely in the international market. The guar meal consists of albuminoids and oil and is rich in protein and husk present is 25% and germ is 50%. The microbial content, rate of hydration and the size of particle defines the food grade of Guar Gum Powder. The E412 guar gum has high nutritional value and is a significant natural food supplement. Commercially guar gum is also available in various modified forms which include hydropropyl guar and cationic.

Guar gum has the largest market in the food industry. Guar gum and Xanthan gum are used frequently in gluten free products and gluten free recipes. The dough yield is increased in baked foods by guar gum. It improves shelf life and texture and provides greater resiliency in baked foods. The syneresis or weeping is prevented in pastry fillings by guar gum, it helps the pastry to remain crust crisp and the water is removed from the filling. Guar gum helps to thicken the dairy products like liquid cheese, kefir, yoghurt, milk and the texture and homogeneity is maintained in sherbets and ice creams. It is used in condiments, soups, meat, frozen food items and sauce and in animal feed.
